Location
This composite comprises images I took in various locations. The cove image was taken at Laguna beach. The dog with sunglasses at a San Diego Balboa park as he appeared with his owner's sunglasses on a warm winter's day.The boat was taken from an image I shot in Greece and the lady in the red leather dress was taken in Venice Italy.Time
The Beach scene was taken on a winter afternoon and I had no plan to use it in a composite. It was just a gorgeous quiet cove radiant in the sunlight and secluded. The winter light in southern California is brilliant and far more dramatic then in other seasons.Lighting
All the componants were taken in natural sunlight and in searching for the seperate parts I was looking for believable matching light intensities and light directions.Equipment
I photographed all the seperate images with a Nikon D700 and a 24-85 mm zoom.Inspiration
I enjoy developing stories by compositing images in a process of starting with a basic scene which seems to lend itself to various possibilities.I don't usually know where I am going with the story but begin searching for images which could work together technically and expressively. It is exciting to see what emerges.Sometimes I reach a dead end and sometimes the story unfolds magically and everything works. as in this image.I enjoyed the extravagant city lady in red being stranded in this natural cove arriving in a boat which seemed not at all to be her likely mode of transportation. And her fancy dog with his stiff pose is almost surreal as well as humorous. Now it is up to the viewer to. develop a plausible story line and each viewer woll have his or her own version. The viewer becomes a participant as well as just looking at the image and in this way a circle is created between photographer and viewer.Editing
Post processing was extensive and done in Photo shop with many layers and careful brush work.Shadows were added and color adjusted. In my camera bag
I normally have a Nikon D4 and eide middle and tele zoom all 2.8 covering the full range.I carry a flash, Pocket wizards, magmod modifiers and a light tripod .Sometimes a reflector.Feedback
My advice is to collect potentially interesting land or cityscapes that could be interesting as a basis for compositing. Also fascinatjng details that can be kept in a folder for later additions and story building. When you are out and about keep an open eye for exciting or especially beautiful imagery .This leads to a heightened awareness of what one sees One begins to compose on the go and the imagination takes wings..I often take a small notepad and pen while I am photographing on my travels or free time so that when I have an idea for a composite I can jot down a little diagram for later use.I might note the time of day ,season and mood. This is just my way of proceeding. It is a combination of coincidence ,spontaneity,,searching (without stress) ,finding, and imagination.
