Thanks, everyone. I actually didn't even realize I'd won this until I saw your post today. I appreciate the kind words.

Behind The Lens

Location

I was photographing an old grist mill in Guilford Co. in central North Carolina (US), when I spotted this old corn grinder sitting on the porch of the mill. The designs of the wheel, along with the spider weds, caught my eye immediately.

Time

It was shot around noon. It was in shade though, so I didn't have to worry about harsh shadows. I actually thought the generally flat lighting helped to bring out the details of the metal piece.

Lighting

See above.

Equipment

Nikon D-300, 18-55mm Nikkor zoom, tripod, no flash.

Inspiration

The general design of the meshed gears, along with the spider weds on it.

Editing

Because the lighting was generally flat (full shadow), I bumped up the contrast a little.

In my camera bag

Nikon D-300, 80-400mm Nikkor zoom, 18-55mm Nikkor zoom, 55-200mm Nikkor zoom, 10-20mm Sigma wide angle zoom, various filters, 4 D-300 batteries, variety of memory cards

Feedback

Keep moving in on your subject. Look for the details. Look for the angle that is new or unusual to the viewer. The viewer typically sees a subject head-on, so present it in a different way.
