Location
Taken near Stump Lake, BC; which is about a half hour out of Merritt.Time
This was taken shortly after 9pm, so there was still appreciable light in the skyLighting
Three things at work here; there was significant smoke in the area from the wildfires, and just a bit of cloud. Those served to diffuse the moonlight just enough for a decent exposure of the foreground without blowing out the moon itselfEquipment
Shot with a Sigma 150-600 Sport on a Nikon D850, handheld (with the help of a big rock!)Inspiration
I was scouting for a spot to catch the moon rising over the hills when i spotted the herd of wild horses standing on the knoll. I decided to backtrack & get as far away from them as i could, mainly because i didn't want to spook them, but also so i could compress the image a bit by shooting with a longer focal length.Editing
knocked the highlights down quite a bit, & just boosted the shadows enough to retain a hint of detailIn my camera bag
Everything! My wife & i travel a lot in our work (we provide emergency equine response transport for medical situations, evacuations, etc), so we never know what we're going to encounter & in what conditions. We carry three large camera bags, all of which are crammed full ... i'll never admit to hoarding though!Feedback
The moon position was partly calculated with the help of Photo Ephemeris, so i had a good idea in advance of where i wanted to be. The horses were pure luck, but understanding their nature helped me avoid sending them running off before i could capture this
